#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 96: INTENTION -“Setting an intention taps into the desires of your heart.”
– Terrie Elizabeth Reeves
New Year’s is often accompanied by people making personal resolutions, but those resolutions are frequently short-lived. Why do 80% of New Year’s resolutions experience a fast fizzle. I think far too often we place unrealistic expectations on ourselves, and all that does is add more pressure. 😝 Rather than goals this year, think in terms of intentions.
What do you want to do this year that will improve the quality of your life and WHY is that important? Let your answers guide and fuel your 2020 intentions. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 91: ALIGNMENT -WHEN IT FITS IT FLOWS 🌊 might be your ticket 🎟 to greater happiness. Most of you have experienced being in flow or in the zone and you might even remember the associated feelings you had while there. When you engage in activities that align with your values, tap into your talent, spark your creativity and feed your soul, it is hard not to find yourself in flow. It is a state of being which feels in some ways effortless. How are you spending your time and energy in ways that move you into flow? It is a healthy place to be, so pause and consider what you are doing when you are there. Consider doing more of it and find people who value and enjoy the same things. Life is more fun spending time in flow with like-minded people.🙂🤸♀️ Busyness can rob you of flow.... don't let it.

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 89: SELF-CARE -
Self-care, a word that is often revered but less often practiced. A lot of people wake up in the morning, grab a cup of coffee and plow into their day headfirst. How do you start your day? Does your “to do list” start ruminating in your head the moment you wake up causing your mind and body to move into overdrive? Ever wonder why this fast start occurs? Your brain is always processing and when you wake up it attaches to a thought that can move you immediately into action without any regard to how you are feeling. This thought centered processing often moves you straight into go mode. There is a reason this happens. Your brain gets a hit of dopamine (a happy fix) every time you complete a task, so the more you do the more hits you get. Has your “to do list” become a drug that fuels your addiction to busyness? I don’t know about you, but I can get so focused on completing tasks that I forget to enjoy the moment, and isn't experiencing the moment where life is supposed to be lived? Unfortunately, not a concept that is highly regarded, encouraged or rewarded in our society.
So, what if, you paused daily to get grounded and more in tune with your thoughts and feelings? Consider taking a few me-centered moments in the morning to take personal inventory. Checking in by asking yourself how you feel emotionally and physically is a great way to gauge if your tank is full, empty or somewhere in between. Becoming more aware may actually point you in a healthier direction which certainly includes self-care. Two statements I hear a lot that can hijack you on the road to self-care are…. I feel guilty when I do things to take care of myself and I can’t seem to find the time to fit self-care into my busy schedule. If this resonates with you join the club because almost everyone is a member. So, how can you get past these barriers? Answer the next question and see if it helps move you in the right direction. What can you do more of in your life that makes you feel physically healthy, emotionally happy and spiritually whole? Awareness can be a great catalyst for change and it often fuels intentional action. Consider one small thing you can do each day to practice self-care and get clear on why being nice to yourself is so important. Understanding your WHY can take you below the surface of thought to a deeper place where emotions live. Tapping into emotions like self-love and compassion are great motivators. We are all busy and time and energy are precious commodities and so are you.
Self-care is like giving yourself a big emotional hug and who doesn’t need a hug.
Fact: Hugging someone for more than 30 seconds will shift their energy and yours from a thought lead transaction to a HEART centered experience.
This Thanksgiving try hugging friends and family a little longer. It will make them feel better and you too.

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 85: ENGAGEMENT - Whether you are trying to motivate yourself, your children or your team, engagement is key. What inspires someone to be all in? #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 84: PAUSE - I am sure you have heard of Stop, Drop and Roll, the fire safety technique that is taught to children. These types of educational phrases can help us remember a few simple things to do especially when under stress. In this case, following this process could save your life. When you are under stress you can lose the ability to process rationally because the frontal cortex, often referred to as the “executive” part of the brain gets hijacked. Emotions take over and you may find yourself in auto pilot reactionary mode. There are many reasons you land in this place but too much to discuss in this short FB post. However, I want to make a very simple stop, drop and roll suggestion for you to consider.
If you find yourself triggered, getting irritated, feeling out of control, or ready to fire back at someone consider taking an extra minute to Pause, Process and Proceed. Give yourself time to pause and breathe, the time to process what you are experiencing, and once your emotions have settled you can proceed forward with greater intention, or you may even decide to do nothing for a while.
If you begin to notice patterns in your behavior, dig a little deeper and ask yourself why you are being triggered. Your emotions are like icebergs, the tip is the reaction but what lies under the water is what makes up the power and mass. Be curious and inquire by looking underneath the surface. Avoid the collision… pause, inquire and perhaps change course.

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 83: RESILIENCY -
“There is light on the other side of darkness, believe in yourself and trust the process”. – Terrie Reeves Posting this for anyone who is feeling alone. Pause and give yourself permission to feel. It's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt or you will silently shatter inside. The good news is you are not alone and the heart is resilient. It can be broken into millions of pieces but it will heal, and the tiny cracks left behind add character and contribute to this beautiful and sometimes messy experience called life. There are no shortcuts through struggles, but you don’t have to go it alone. Reach out to your tribe and they will help you put the pieces back together. #TrustYourself #ArmorOff #Resiliency #Empowerment #Tribe

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 81: SELF - The word “SELF” creates different mental constructs for each of us and can be combined with other words that give it even deeper meaning. I share this because our Westernized society doesn’t encourage us to slow down in order to do introspection. So, I invite you to consider how the word SELF can actually point you in the right direction.
1. Self-refection – pausing to take personal inventory
2. Self-awareness – waking up to your own intuition
3. Self-discovery – opening up to new possibilities
4. Self-care – giving yourself down-time, grace, compassion and love
5. Self-selection – spending your time and energy wisely
6. Self-actualization – landing in a place that feels like home
Stay in tune with your heart’s desire, practice self-care and choose with greater intention how you spend your time and energy. Intuition is powerful but it does require you to pause, and to trust yourself and the process.
"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside, awakes." Carl Jung

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 78: PAUSE - Days that mark something significant like anniversaries, birthdays and holidays can often prompt self-reflection. In a world that tends to trigger busyness, applaud performance and fuel consumption, self-reflection can be a get place to land. The ability to be present in the moment is a good way to ground and to check in with yourself. When you are moving at lightning fast speed trying to keep up with your to do list, life can become a blur. So, hit the pause button this weekend and give yourself permission to slow down and to be grateful. Be present and open so you don’t miss the things that you are intended to experience. You cannot get time back or buy more of it, so be intentional about how you spend it. Life is short so stop rushing so you don’t miss it. Sometimes I share things that I need to work on myself…. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 76: PAUSE - Pausing is so important and when you do it the benefits can be life changing.
The PAUSE is that sacred space between stimulus and reaction. Mindfulness lives in the pause, and it is in this space that we allow ourselves the gift to process what we are thinking and feeling in order to respond with greater intention. "Pause to breathe. Pause before you react. Pause before assuming. Pause before accusing or defending. Pause before judging yourself and others. Pause to seek the truth. Pause to get clear. Pause so you can choose your path wisely. Let the pause be the bridge between thought, emotion and action.”
– Terrie Elizabeth Reeves
Life is made up of the sum total of your actions, so take yourself off auto pilot by pausing and waking up in the moment. Begin to notice… What are your default behaviors? Next time you find yourself triggered see if you can pause and resist the urge to react. Meet yourself with kindness and choose your path with greater care and intention. What habitual behavior do you have that is not serving your higher good? Pause to notice and consider a new path. A path that may lead you to healthier possibilities for your life.

The word surrender can be viewed in different ways. What does it mean to you? I love this compassionate way of thinking about surrender. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 74: MOOD - Do you sometimes find yourself in a mood and you are not exactly sure how you got there? Have you ever thought about what creates your mood? Here is the 60 second skinny on the subject. We are all impacted by internal and external stimulus (situations, experiences etc.) that trigger our emotions. Feelings/emotions over an extended period of time create our mood. So, if you want to change your mood, pause and ponder what is causing me to feel the emotions I am feeling and ask yourself, do I like the way I feel? If you do, notice why you are experiencing positive emotions and pause to be grateful. If you are not, do the same thing and notice why you are experiencing negative emotions and consider: 1. First, meeting yourself with kindness 2. Pausing, breathing and connecting with the sensations in your body 3. Asking yourself more ”why” questions to better understand what is at the fulcrum (center) of your negative experience 4. Taking intentional action by doing something that will shift your mood. Just noticing your mood.... good, bad or indifferent without judgement is a good place to start. The only way you can appreciate something or change something, is if you aware of it. So, pause more and wake-up to how you are feeling and reacting. To read more on how to pause with greater intention consider reading. www.empowerhealthamerica.com/blog/practice-the-pause-exercise

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 71: HUG - My mom inspired this post. I was looking through an old box for my high school senior album and a letter fell out that my mom (Billie) had written her mom (Faith... my grandmother) April 28th, 1987. I stopped and read it and it lit up my heart, turned on a few tears, and reminded me how precious life and relationships are. Mothers are so special. 💙 Here are two poignant excerpts from my moms letter to her mom. "Just wanted to let you know how much I love you and Terrie. I don't hug you or Terrie enough. I don't know why, except that sometimes I think that you'll always be there. Well, next time we see each other, I'm going to hug you real tight. Thanks for giving and helping me develop the spirit and openness I feel towards life. A little rusty at times, but in the rough of the ocean of life, believe me, I will always pull through, because of the spirit to survive you have instilled in me, and the vision to see ahead and feel hope, faith and charity. YOU are so special and I love you dearly and eternally.” Your daughter (lucky) @Billie Rodrigue.

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 70: EMOTIONAL AWARENESS - Pausing to take emotional inventory is a valuable way to start each day. Taking the time to become more aware of how you are feeling physically and emotionally will give you valuable information that can help shape your day. Self inquiry is a great way to check in and you can do that by asking yourself simple questions. How do I feel energetically? How do I feel emotionally? How do I feel physically? Recognize there is no wrong or right answer, and it is important to meet yourself exactly where you are, without judgment. Let what surfaces for you, and what you are feeling provide insight that can be used to guide you into your day. Pausing each day to take inventory is a valuable habit to integrate into your life, for your life. Strengthening your emotional awareness will help you work wisely, and live abundantly. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 69: LEAP OF FAITH - Do you sometimes feel paralyzed in life, stuck in indecision or frozen in the status quo? Playing it safe and doing nothing can invite you into its comfort but personal growth and new possibilities don't live there. Taking a leap of faith and making changes in your life takes courage, desire and a belief that on the other side of change there is something extraordinary waiting for you. Is there something you want to do but you can't seem to take the first step? If so, identify what it is holding you back and why, and perhaps your answers will help you step into the unknown. “Embracing change requires letting go, not defending or resisting but pausing to inquire. To be curious, open minded and awake to new possibilities. To have the capacity to see beyond the obvious and the desire and courage to walk into the unknown. Change requires letting go of the familiar, stepping beyond what is comfortable and trusting the process.” - Terrie Reeves

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 65: TRAINING - Training your brain can tame that inner voice. Have you ever heard or read something that made you stop and go, wow? It happened to me this morning. I was reading a book that asked this question, who do you listen to the most in life? The answer is yourself. I think about this concept occasionally but today this question caused me to pause and think more deeply about it. Do you ever find yourself having ruminating thoughts that swirl around in your head like a plane circling the runway? Maybe you experience patterns of thought that bounce back and forth like a little silver ball in a pinball machine. Regardless, it is easy for thoughts to get stuck in a loop, which can hold you hostage to internal conversations that are not encouraging, especially when things are tough or you are facing a big life challenge. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 64: REFRAMING - How can reframing improve my relationships and life? Things are not always as they appear. Reframing your thinking requires you to consider new possibilities for yourself, others and situations. For example, have you ever assumed someone felt a certain way about you, only to find out that your assumption was not accurate, or you decided not to try something new because you feared you might fail? Your ability to reframe your thinking can be a valuable tool in these types of situations. If you find yourself questioning a situation or feeling held back from doing something, take a moment and notice your thoughts and feelings so that you don't react in auto pilot mode. Ask yourself, is there another possibility or way of viewing this situation that might change my perspective? Considering alternate possibilities will allow you to see life through a broader lens, will influence your thinking and perhaps even change the way you react and respond to situations in life. Questions to ponder: 1) How can I handle situations when I feel someone important in my life feels negatively towards me? Direct communication with the person may be valuable in order to inquire rather than assume. 2) If I don't try something because I fear the outcome, how can I look at fear differently? Consider looking at fear as an important part of the learning process. Final thought: Your willingness to consider another person's point of view will lead to more productive conversations, greater understanding and stronger relationships. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 63: CONDUIT - Have you ever taken the time to notice how you feel energetically and emotionally when you wake up? To pause and check in is a great thing to consider doing, so you are more aware of what energy you are taking out the door. We are all conduits, carrying our energy with us. So, be aware of the energy you are spreading into the world and the people around you. You don't have to be sunshine all the time, but remember energy is contagious. Notice how your energy shows up in a room and how you affect people. What energy do you want to spread? A friend of mine came up with a quote that he carries with him today -- "Choose Your Day". -- JT Anderson

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 59: ACTIVE LISTENING - Have you talked to someone over the phone or in person this week and wondered if you started saying…. blah, blah, blah, if they would even notice? Active listening is not easy. It requires you to be fully present and focused on what the other person is sharing. Two things that can hijack your attention: 1. Random thoughts that move your attention away from the present moment. 2. Focusing on what you want to say or how you want to respond. Our brain jumps to a new thought about every 3 seconds, so this might explain why active listening is so hard. However, it is not impossible. You can strengthen your listening skills just like a muscle. 8 things to consider: 1. Make sure you have the capacity to have a meaningful conversation 2. Notice when you are distracted, and without judgement bring yourself back to the moment 3. Ask questions to check for understanding 4. Put away your cell phone 5. Make eye-contact
6. Have conversations in environments that have less distraction 7. Engage with the person that is sharing 8. If appropriate, wrap-up the conversation with a recap of what you hear. The most meaningful and effective conversations require all parties to be active listeners, engaged and present in the moment. If you have any other ideas please share.
Make your conversations this holiday weekend more meaningful by being an active listener. It is also OK, to tell someone you don’t have the capacity to be fully present for a meaningful conversation. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 58: GUIDING PRINCIPLES - We all have a moral compass and a set of values that help guide us through life. These values have been influenced by our family of origin, teachers, mentors, friends and life experiences. Our perspectives and opinions are often formed by some of the same influences that shape our values. No doubt, we are all different, and we move through life with our own set of ideals, and we live our lives according to our own guiding principles. Think about this concept by imagining a guiding principle that is important to you. For example, one of my guiding principles is that if I am unclear or I have a strong reaction to something, I try and "inquire first rather than judge, defend or assume". Sometimes things are easier said than done, but I am clear that this guiding principle is important to me. What guiding principle is important to you and how do you integrate it into your actions? Life is not always easy but having a clear set of guiding principles can serve as a roadmap to help you live life with greater attention and intention. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 57: BRAIN HEALTH - Your brain is like any other muscle, with exercise you can improve your brain health. 10 tips to consider. 1. Take a brain break: Take intentional pauses throughout the day and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. 2. Take inventory of ruminating thought: If you notice common themes reoccurring write them down. 3. Dive under the surface and inquire: Spend some time proactively seeking to understand what is causing your ruminating thoughts. 4. Solve don’t get stuck: Focus on how you can move your thinking in a positive direction by spending your time and energy focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on negative thoughts. 5. Let it be: If you can’t let something go or find a solution, try giving yourself permission to just let it be for a while. 6. Move for better mental health: Exercise is not only good for the body, it is a great for the mind. 7. Fuel your brain for optimal performance: What you put into your body also affects your brain, so eat wisely. 8. Talk about it: Open up to a trusted resource, it is a great way to release negative energy and get rid of stress. 9. Laugh and play every day: The brain gets a positive jolt when you are relaxed and having fun. 10: Creativity lights up the brain: Your brain is happy when you give that inner child permission to paint, dance, sing, write and color outside the lines. Dare I push the envelope and ask you to consider an 11th tip: Try meditation, it is exercise for the brain and certainly worth exploring. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 55: GENEROSITY - I went to the 10% Happier lecture Wednesday night with some friends and the topic was around meditation and mindfulness which is my jam. The ability to pause, to check in, to regulate and to take action with greater intention.... what a gift to give yourself and others. Not to upstage this post with another theme but I was so moved Wednesday night when my friend Ann Marie Kinlin did a random act of kindness by purchasing and gifting me the book 10% Happier. I was touched by her generosity and thanked her, and she humbly responded by sharing this beautiful quote. In it's simplicity I found it to be quite powerful, so I wanted to share it forward. Sometimes the simplest things can have extraordinary impact. It's been a slippery slope for me lately and Ann Marie's generosity truly brightened my day. Generosity can take on many forms. What can you do today to brighten someone's day? Thanks HopeWay for bringing Dan Harris to Charlotte and for opening up a much needed dialogue around mental health. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 54: WISDOM - This morning when I was teaching I was thinking about how I could make better decisions in my life and the word WISDOM came up for me. I have been trying to pause more to notice what is driving my choices and influencing the way I respond to life. It is easy to slip into "head space thinking" only and ignore the whispers of your heart or the flip side, react from a place fueled only by emotion. I believe wisdom is that sweet balance of processing life in a more holistic fashion by trusting your head and heart to work in concert. Wisdom doesn't react... it takes it's time. It may even encourage you to pause until, "all feels good in your soul". Making the wise choice is not easy but I believe worth the extra effort. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 53: PRESENCE - My amazing friend Johnna Smith inspired this post on presence. I took her yoga class this morning and she reminded us that patience is a good quality to have but that being present is at the foundation of patience. I have grown to value the ability to sit still in the moment and to allow myself to be a witness to my own thoughts and feelings. In this awake state it is easier to navigate my emotions and it allows me to be more patient with myself and others. I am definitely a work in process in this area but I am trying to pause more before I react, assume or take action. All emotion is temporary and learning to let it pass through you is powerful and can even be cathartic. Johnna also read one of my favorite poems by Rumi called, The Guest House. Our emotions are like guests in our house, they come and go and bring different energy with them so embrace it all and be grateful. How can you practice being more present?
The Guest House:
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 52: LOVE - Love is that deep stirring that is felt in the heart and soul… it is intangible yet a palatable energy that connects us all. There is no greater force on this planet than love. Love doesn’t judge, it leans into understanding, empathy and acceptance. Love is expressed in words but it comes to life through action. It shows up as a smile, a touch, an act of kindness, a hug, a helping hand… all given without measure or expectation. If you are reading this, I encourage you to pause and think about all the people that love you and what their love has taught you. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 51: ZEN - Ever find yourself pulling into your driveway and not remembering the drive home? Our brains can default to auto pilot quite easily and before you know it the day is over. Alan Watt's definition captures the essence of the word Zen beautifully. "Zen is liberation from time. For if we open our eyes and see clearly, it becomes obvious that there is no other time than this instant, and that the past and the future are abstractions without any concrete reality.” I think of Zen as that sacred space suspended between the past and the present. The hard part is being fully present when you are there. Try practicing an intentional 3 minute pause this week before an important conversation or meeting or before making an important decision. It is a great way to get grounded and you might like what you experience and the outcome. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 48: Heart - Not sure how you feel, but some days I wake up feeling invincible and other days I feel like I am pushing a boulder up a steep hill in the rain by myself. When these days occur I tend to show up dressed as the energizer bunny. I dig in, push hard and tap into my willpower driven reserves. However, I don't think getting through the day is about willpower at all.... I think it is about willingness, a willingness to have an open heart despite the circumstances. Don't get jaded, disillusioned or angry. Choose the path that invites you to feel vulnerable and hopeful so your heart remains open. For it is your heart that has the power to move you through even the toughest of times, because it is fueled by the greatest force on our planet.... #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 47: HEALING - is the process of getting to the other side of sadness. First stop.... sorrow which can bear down on your heart like a boulder creating a barrier to joy. However, if you keep moving forward... taking small steps, pausing and then taking another, you will begin to feel the weight of the boulder lifting. In time, the boulder will become a rock, the rock will become a stone, the stone will become a pebble and the pebble will become a grain of sand. In time your heart won't feel as heavy and the line between sadness and joy will begin to blur. The healing process helps you realize that to feel sorrow is to have also felt great joy. Losing someone special teaches you the power of love and healing moves you closer to being grateful for the time you had rather than what you lost. The process requires you to pause and make time to feel your way to the other side in order to find peace in a new normal. Healing is a sacred process in which there are no shortcuts. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 45: PURPOSE - How well do you know yourself? What is your purpose? Finding clarity is not always easy and as life changes your purpose may adjust with it. Sometimes it takes big life events to cause you to pause and take inventory but why not be proactive. I have had the privilege of interviewing a lot of amazing people over the years but what has moved me the most is to witness someone's ability to be vulnerable. Asking powerful questions has the ability to connect people to pieces of their lives that perhaps they have never ventured. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 43: EMOTION - I have witnessed a lot of people struggling with sadness and depression lately which inspired this post. How do you process your emotions? An important question because emotions are powerful and can take you in many different directions in your mind. Emotions effect your health, self-esteem, mood, energy and can impact how you react and the decisions you make. So, next time you feel overwhelmed or emotionally out of balance take time to pause, to feel, to process and to practice self-awareness and self-care. Developing the capacity to better manage your emotional well-being is possible... not by avoiding how you feel but by dropping in to feel more deeply and to examine what is triggering your emotions. Self-discovery is powerful but you don't have to battle life's challenges alone. Reach out for help and count on the right people to show-up because they will if you have the courage to ask for help. In this fast paced, go motivated, goal oriented world it is easy to stay detached and unaware of where you are energetically. Energy is a precious commodity and the more you use the more you need to replenish, which is why taking time to recharge is so important. If you dive a little deeper you will soon realize that fatigue is multi-dimensional... you can feel emotionally exhausted, physically tired, and mentally drained independently or experience them all at once.
