#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 84: PAUSE - I am sure you have heard of Stop, Drop and Roll, the fire safety technique that is taught to children. These types of educational phrases can help us remember a few simple things to do especially when under stress. In this case, following this process could save your life. When you are under stress you can lose the ability to process rationally because the frontal cortex, often referred to as the “executive” part of the brain gets hijacked. Emotions take over and you may find yourself in auto pilot reactionary mode. There are many reasons you land in this place but too much to discuss in this short FB post. However, I want to make a very simple stop, drop and roll suggestion for you to consider.
If you find yourself triggered, getting irritated, feeling out of control, or ready to fire back at someone consider taking an extra minute to Pause, Process and Proceed. Give yourself time to pause and breathe, the time to process what you are experiencing, and once your emotions have settled you can proceed forward with greater intention, or you may even decide to do nothing for a while.
If you begin to notice patterns in your behavior, dig a little deeper and ask yourself why you are being triggered. Your emotions are like icebergs, the tip is the reaction but what lies under the water is what makes up the power and mass. Be curious and inquire by looking underneath the surface. Avoid the collision… pause, inquire and perhaps change course.

I share this because our Westernized society doesn’t encourage us to slow down in order to do introspection. So, I invite you to consider how the word SELF can actually point you in the right direction.

2. Self-awareness – waking up to your own intuition
3. Self-discovery – opening up to new possibilities
4. Self-care – giving yourself down-time, grace, compassion and love

#TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 74: MOOD - Do you sometimes find yourself in a mood and you are not exactly sure how you got there? Have you ever thought about what creates your mood? Here is the 60 second skinny on the subject. We are all impacted by internal and external stimulus (situations, experiences etc.) that trigger our emotions. Feelings/emotions over an extended period of time create our mood. So, if you want to change your mood, pause and ponder what is causing me to feel the emotions I am feeling and ask yourself, do I like the way I feel? If you do, notice why you are experiencing positive emotions and pause to be grateful. If you are not, do the same thing and notice why you are experiencing negative emotions and consider: 1. First, meeting yourself with kindness 2. Pausing, breathing and connecting with the sensations in your body 3. Asking yourself more ”why” questions to better understand what is at the fulcrum (center) of your negative experience 4. Taking intentional action by doing something that will shift your mood. Just noticing your mood.... good, bad or indifferent without judgement is a good place to start. The only way you can appreciate something or change something, is if you aware of it. I was looking through an old box for my high school senior album and a letter fell out that my mom (Billie) had written her mom (Faith... my grandmother) April 28th, 1987. I stopped and read it and it lit up my heart, turned on a few tears, and reminded me how precious life and relationships are. Mothers are so special. 💙 Here are two poignant excerpts from my moms letter to her mom. "Just wanted to let you know how much I love you and Terrie. I don't hug you or Terrie enough. It happened to me this morning. I was reading a book that asked this question, who do you listen to the most in life? The answer is yourself. I think about this concept occasionally but today this question caused me to pause and think more deeply about it. Do you ever find yourself having ruminating thoughts that swirl around in your head like a plane circling the runway? Maybe you experience patterns of thought that bounce back and forth like a little silver ball in a pinball machine. Regardless, it is easy for thoughts to get stuck in a loop, which can hold you hostage to internal conversations that are not encouraging, especially when things are tough or you are facing a big life challenge. Reframing your thinking requires you to consider new possibilities for yourself, others and situations. For example, have you ever assumed someone felt a certain way about you, only to find out that your assumption was not accurate, or you decided not to try something new because you feared you might fail? Your ability to reframe your thinking can be a valuable tool in these types of situations. If you find yourself questioning a situation or feeling held back from doing something, take a moment and notice your thoughts and feelings so that you don't react in auto pilot mode. Ask yourself, is there another possibility or way of viewing this situation that might change my perspective? Considering alternate possibilities will allow you to see life through a broader lens, will influence your thinking and perhaps even change the way you react and respond to situations in life. Questions to ponder: 1) How can I handle situations when I feel someone important in my life feels negatively towards me? Direct communication with the person may be valuable in order to inquire rather than assume. 2) If I don't try something because I fear the outcome, how can I look at fear differently? Consider looking at fear as an important part of the learning process. Final thought: Your willingness to consider another person's point of view will lead to more productive conversations, greater understanding and stronger relationships. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 59: ACTIVE LISTENING - Have you talked to someone over the phone or in person this week and wondered if you started saying…. blah, blah, blah, if they would even notice? Active listening is not easy. It requires you to be fully present and focused on what the other person is sharing. Two things that can hijack your attention: 1. Random thoughts that move your attention away from the present moment. 2. Focusing on what you want to say or how you want to respond. Our brain jumps to a new thought about every 3 seconds, so this might explain why active listening is so hard. However, it is not impossible. You can strengthen your listening skills just like a muscle. 8 things to consider: 1. Make sure you have the capacity to have a meaningful conversation 2. Notice when you are distracted, and without judgement bring yourself back to the moment 3. Ask questions to check for understanding 4. Put away your cell phone 5. Make eye-contact
6. Have conversations in environments that have less distraction 7. Engage with the person that is sharing 8. If appropriate, wrap-up the conversation with a recap of what you hear. The most meaningful and effective conversations require all parties to be active listeners, engaged and present in the moment. If you have any other ideas please share.

These values have been influenced by our family of origin, teachers, mentors, friends and life experiences. Our perspectives and opinions are often formed by some of the same influences that shape our values. No doubt, we are all different, and we move through life with our own set of ideals, and we live our lives according to our own guiding principles. Think about this concept by imagining a guiding principle that is important to you. For example, one of my guiding principles is that if I am unclear or I have a strong reaction to something, I try and "inquire first rather than judge, defend or assume". Take a brain break: Take intentional pauses throughout the day and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. 2. Take inventory of ruminating thought: If you notice common themes reoccurring write them down. 3. Dive under the surface and inquire: Spend some time proactively seeking to understand what is causing your ruminating thoughts. 4. Solve don’t get stuck: Focus on how you can move your thinking in a positive direction by spending your time and energy focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on negative thoughts. 5. Let it be: If you can’t let something go or find a solution, try giving yourself permission to just let it be for a while. 6. Move for better mental health: Exercise is not only good for the body, it is a great for the mind. 7. Fuel your brain for optimal performance: What you put into your body also affects your brain, so eat wisely. 8. Talk about it: Open up to a trusted resource, it is a great way to release negative energy and get rid of stress. 9. I have been trying to pause more to notice what is driving my choices and influencing the way I respond to life. It is easy to slip into "head space thinking" only and ignore the whispers of your heart or the flip side, react from a place fueled only by emotion. I believe wisdom is that sweet balance of processing life in a more holistic fashion by trusting your head and heart to work in concert. Wisdom doesn't react... it takes it's time. #TrainForLifeEmpowermentCampaign Post 53: PRESENCE - My amazing friend Johnna Smith inspired this post on presence. I took her yoga class this morning and she reminded us that patience is a good quality to have but that being present is at the foundation of patience. I have grown to value the ability to sit still in the moment and to allow myself to be a witness to my own thoughts and feelings. In this awake state it is easier to navigate my emotions and it allows me to be more patient with myself and others. I am definitely a work in process in this area but I am trying to pause more before I react, assume or take action. All emotion is temporary and learning to let it pass through you is powerful and can even be cathartic. Johnna also read one of my favorite poems by Rumi called, The Guest House. Our emotions are like guests in our house, they come and go and bring different energy with them so embrace it all and be grateful. How can you practice being more present?

Our brains can default to auto pilot quite easily and before you know it the day is over. Alan Watt's definition captures the essence of the word Zen beautifully. "Zen is liberation from time. For if we open our eyes and see clearly, it becomes obvious that there is no other time than this instant, and that the past and the future are abstractions without any concrete reality.” I think of Zen as that sacred space suspended between the past and the present. First stop.... sorrow which can bear down on your heart like a boulder creating a barrier to joy. However, if you keep moving forward... taking small steps, pausing and then taking another, you will begin to feel the weight of the boulder lifting. In time, the boulder will become a rock, the rock will become a stone, the stone will become a pebble and the pebble will become a grain of sand. In time your heart won't feel as heavy and the line between sadness and joy will begin to blur. The healing process helps you realize that to feel sorrow is to have also felt great joy. Losing someone special teaches you the power of love and healing moves you closer to being grateful for the time you had rather than what you lost. However, we often put too much pressure on ourselves to have an immediate answer and we take premature action.
